Guide to a relict badly damaged by mining subsidence and acquired by the Trust in an act of faith in 1973. Its sensational, yet sympathetic restoration, gave equal weight to the areas 'below stairs' and the gardens, recreating a home and preserving something of the quirkiness of its former owners. This success, against the odds (the house lies on the outskirts of a not very exciting market town in N.E. Wales) paved the way for more recent bold acquisitions by the Trust, such as a house in Menlove Avenue, Liverpool and most recently Tyntesfield.
