Written by a team at the Komarov Institute headed by Academician Armen Takhtajan, this Red Data Book deals only with the rare plants of Russia; other constituent republics of the former USSR are excluded. With brief descriptions, maps, colour illustrations (both in the text and as glossy photographs) and a good bibliography, this book is of exceptional quality (for the USSR) both in content and presentation. Coverage includes cryptogams and even lichens. Some of the entries, such as Juniperus excelsa, are not particularly rare in their world distribution, but are so within Russia (Krasnodar in this case). In total 553 species are treated, of which 440 are phanerogams, 29 lichens and 17 fungi. 592 pp.
