John Torrey: a story of North American botany

By: Rogers, A.D.

Price: £40.00

Gilt motif (intials of John Torrey and Torrey Pine) on front board, gilt lettering (title and author) and library class mark on spine; bookplate of The American Library, London together with issue label and usual 'withdrawn' label and small circular stamp on dedication page. Despite its sojourn in the library, never issued (apparently) and very little worn. Biography of one of America's leading plant taxonomists of the 19th century; also an assayer of the U.S. Mint (I didn't know that!). Together with Asa Gray he was responsible for compiling one of the major floras of the continent. By the 1860s he was rated ahead of the much-travelled Thomas Nuttall as the most prominent North American botanist. Bibliography, including citation of sources, on pp. 316-333.
