Original red buckram, gilded edging. Illustrated by 8 superb chromolithographs by Danielsson & Co. from original drawings by A. Thorburn (Plate 10, Teal, detached) and 8 plates and 100 monochrome figures from original drawings by G.E. Lodge; 3 'photographs from nature' by R.B. Lodge. Owner's signature (L. Ellingham). Rusty impression of paperclip, end papers cracked at junctions with hinge, some foxing affecting text, plates' tissue guards browned, spine frayed at tips, otherwise a fair, if well-used copy. The brief descriptions of each species are supplemented by informative accounts of breeding behaviour, migration, song, food preferences and some more philosophical comments. One of the most erudite of British bird books.
